Profile

D.Phil. in Oriental (Chinese) Studies, University of Oxford
M.Phil. in English, University of Hong Kong
B.A. in English and Comparative Literature, University of Hong Kong

Ruth Hung is now preparing a manuscript on the political and ethical implications of writing about the self in the post-1989 era and within the context of global capitalism. The manuscript focuses on a collection of popular memoirs authored by Chinese writers who have lived through the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-76) and are now residing abroad. Ruth's current research interests are intellectuals, global Maoism and third-world Marxism, and the politics of knowledge production, circulation, and reception. She is committed to the exploration and building of a tolerant interactive culture, and to the understanding and practice of a kind of historical criticism that is required to make possible that exploration and building.
