As
a fundamental element of the Language and Communication (L&C) Programme
is language in real-world contexts, and in support of the educational
aims of HKU of performing social responsibilities as a member of the
global community, and playing a leading role in improving the well-being
of fellow citizens and humankind, L&C students are encouraged to
use their language and communication skills in community projects.
In
2010, we are collaborating with i-Learner Nebula Group (http://www.i-learner.com.hk)
on their community projects. On 9 April 2010, to celebrate the International
Year of Biodiversity declared by UNESCO, i-Learner, together with the
Society for Community Organisation (SoCO) and Ocean Park, organised
a Biodiversity English Fun Day in Ocean Park for 50 primary school children
from low-income families, in which students not only learn about the
diversity of life on earth and the value this holds for humans, but
also get immersed in an authentic English learning environment when
they interact with i-Learner¡¦s native English speaking teacher. Six
L&C students were volunteers for this event, as assistants to the
teachers in conducting the educational tour, providing help with translating
and helping the weaker children with their English.
L&C
looks forward to engaging in other projects in the global community.
