Alumni and friends will be saddened at the news of the death of Father Alvaro Ribeiro S.J., who passed away on 14th April 2013, aged 65. He had been ill for some time.

Alvaro was an alumnus of the Department of English, and took the title role in Jack Lowcock’s legendary production of King Lear. He went on to a DPhil at Oxford University and was a scholar of eighteenth-century literature as well as a Jesuit priest.

Some alumni may remember Alvaro as a student, others may have been taught by him when he was a member of the Department in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was at that time the Warden of Ricci Hall. He left HKU to become a Professor at Georgetown University in the USA.

As a priest and professor, Alvaro was generous and gregarious, serious and witty. He had a great gift for sharing his knowledge and his enjoyment with others, and he will be much missed.
