School of English offers teaching and supervision at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of English
Studies, Cross-cultural
Studies in English, andLanguage
and Communication. It also contributes to the
four-year Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education
in Language Education (English) programme, administered
by the Faculty of Education.
English Studies includes both the study of literatures
in English (English and American literatures; creative
writing; women's writing; postcolonial and world literature
in English; literary, cultural and film studies; and
critical theory) and English language and linguistics
(sociolinguistics; critical linguistics; discourse analysis;
literary linguistics). Cross-Cultural Studies in English
is a specialised major that focuses on the English language
and literature in English as a site of encounters, fusions,
conflicts and transformations between people and ideas
of different cultures.Language and Communication is
an interdisciplinary program within the Faculty of Arts,
where the use of language is studied from various angles.
It equips students with the intellectual skills to critically
examine the creation of meaning in communication and
trains them to be linguistically well-versed leaders
in a globalized and multicultural world.
The teaching staff is broadly international and currently
comprises sixteen academics who work in different areas
of English Studies, Cross-cultural Studies in English,
and Language and Communication.
Our courses are designed to be interesting, challenging,
and rigorous. Our emphasis is on critical and independent
thinking, and we hope to prepare students to face a
technologically advanced, globally competitive, and
culturally open society. Teaching methods are varied
but typically involve a combination of lectures and
workshops and discussion groups. We constantly strive
to match the content and format of our courses with
students' background, interest and learning objectives.
In 2002, our Department won the University's award for
"Excellence in Education Quality Work".
We offer graduate studies toward two research degrees
and the taught MA in English Studies and MFA in Creative
Writing in English. In addition, the School of English
also collaborates with the Centre for Applied English
Studies on a Postgraduate Diploma in English Studies.
